Pablo Monsalve is a Colombian journalist and photographer with more than fifteen years of experience working across diverse media platforms. Based in Brooklyn, NY, Pablo brings a sharp documentary eye and a deep commitment to storytelling through both words and images.
A graduate of the Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana in Medellín, Colombia, his work has been published in El Colombiano, Universo Centro, Semana, Arcadia, Soho, and Esquire Colombia. His photography has also appeared internationally in outlets such as Gatopardo México, The New York Times, Vox, The Wall Street Journal, New York Magazine, Vanity Fair, Vogue, Getty Images and ViewPress among others.
Since relocating to New York City, Pablo has expanded his practice into audiovisual storytelling. He was awarded the 2019 Creative Capital grant and has exhibited with ChaShaMa and Brooklyn’s El Puente Institute. His work was also featured in the 2015 Cuba Photo Festival, organized by the José Martí Institute of Journalism in Havana.
As a cinematographer and filmmaker, Pablo has shot and recorded sound for music videos, documentaries, and short films. He is currently serving as director of photography for The Hoopwarrior, a documentary exploring the culture of basketball in Puerto Rico. In 2020, he produced Dante, a 16mm short fiction film by Cristian Peña, which was showcased at the Chelsea Film Festival, Ibero-American Film Festival in Miami and several others.
Pablo’s collaborations in Colombian cinema include work as still photographer for Jorge Forero and Diana Bustamante’s film Violencia (2015) and as still photographer and camera assistant for Santiago Henao and Juliana Zuluaga’s Caída Libre (2018).
In 2024, Pablo completed an intensive documentary filmmaking course at the prestigious Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión (EICTV) in San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, under the guidance of Gianfranco Rosi — acclaimed documentarian and winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and the Golden Bear at the Berlinale.
